About Us

My name is Marie Hickinbottom and I have been qualified as a massage therapist since 2000. I have slowly added to my training, enabling me to provide a wider range of treatments.

I established Calmer Therapies in January 2001, to provide a range of holistic therapies within the East Dorset area. Drawing on my experiences of working within A&E Departments at both Poole and Bournemouth NHS Trust Hospitals, I decided that I needed to utilise my skills as a health care worker in another specialist direction. I chose to do an evening class at Bournemouth & Poole College of Further Education in Body Massage and Anatomy & Physiology, and I haven't looked back since. My next alternative therapy based course was in Reiki, where I obtained both my Reiki 1 & 2, under private studies/tuition. This in itself lead me to realise that I had more to offer in the healing industry.

My journey took me forward, training in Indian Head Massage (IHM), Hot Stone Therapy and my latest course, waxing. All these courses were undertaken at Capital Hair & Beauty in Bournemouth, with the qualified guidance of trainers from both Training Solutions & Hive. These are fully established companies providing courses in many hair & beauty skills, with certification accepted by many reputable insurance companies.

I am a member of the Guild of Holistic Therapist (www.holisticguild.co.uk), with whom I am fully insured for all the services I perform. When you book to have a treatment, all my certificates of competancy are on display in the treatment room for you to see.

Calmer's History

In the beginning I worked mainly as a mobile therapist, but when I moved to my current home, my partner & father converted an available space to a luscious treatment room. As soon as you walk in, the smell of the fraigranced candles burning and the ambience of the calming decor just makes you feel like all your strains & stresses have been left at the front door. I still do mobile work, but usually for those who are unable to find transport or for those who have difficulty mobilising.
